Direct Access Motorcycle Test

If you are aged 21 or over, you do not have to take the test on a 125cc motorbike. You have the option to side step the power restriction by passing your test on a large motorcycle (over 35kW or 46.6bhp). This is called the Direct Access Scheme (DAS) and gives you direct access to an unrestricted licence.

At Newcastle Rider Training we use the excellent Honda CBF500, having used its predessor the CB500 ever since the Direct Access Scheme started in 1997.

However, we don't let you loose on the big bike straight away. You will normally start with your CBT on a 125cc machine. We then give you more time on the smaller bike for another session or two on the road. Once we're satisfied that you'll be o.k., you will progress to the larger bike to continue your training and take your test.
